Chemical recycling has the ability to reduce waste plastics’ environmental impact, alleviate climate change, and contribute to the circular economy. For the treatment of polypropylene (PP) waste, this study compares the environmental and economic performance of two such technologies, rapid pyrolysis and gasification, with traditional disposal methods.
For each technology, high-fidelity process simulations are run to acquire the essential mass, energy, and cost data for further analysis. Fast pyrolysis and gasification have been evaluated extensively using the IPCC 2013, ReCiPe, and ILCD 2.0 techniques.
In comparison to traditional techniques of incineration and landfilling, it was determined to have lower overall greenhouse gas emissions and higher overall environmental performance. The chemical recycling systems are likewise found to be very profitable, with total NPVs of $149 million and $96 million for rapid pyrolysis and gasification, respectively. The most influential parameters for both systems’ economic performance are the discount rate, waste PP price, and plant life.
